Coventry Breaks Swimming World record 11.04.2008

MANCHESTER, England

The opening day featured three world record performances. Coventry clocked four minutes 26.52 seconds to beat the time of 4:27.83 set by Yana Klochkova of Ukraine in 2002.

The U.S. broke the men's 4x100 metre freestyle relay record, clocking 3:08.44 to beat the 3:09.57 mark set by Sweden at the 2000 short course worlds.

The Netherlands set a world short-course record for the women's 4x200 metres freestyle relay clocking seven minutes and 38.90 seconds to beat the 7:46.30 mark set by Russia at the 2002 worlds in Moscow.

In the women's 100 backstroke, Montreal's Jennifer Carroll clocked 59.86 seconds in the semifinal to finish 15th overall.

Carroll still has her best event ahead of her, the 50 backstroke, in which she won the world short course title in 2004.

Hanna Kubas of Calgary was 22nd in the same event.

Callum Ng of Vancouver reached the men's 100 backstroke semifinals and placed 15th.

Competition continues Thursday.
