Tournament organiser, Daniel Moyo, has issued an update confirming the structure of the tournament and other practical details.
The tournament kicks off Friday the 2nd April (Good Friday) and ends Saturday with a presentation ceremony and entertainment in the evening.
Teams from Palmerston North, Wellington, Hamilton, Christchurch and the host city will battle it out.
Auckland are the reigning champions and will probably want to defend the cup in front of legions of fans.
This year's programme is all encompassing. There will be activities for kids, women and supporters alike, all in the spirit of getting together and uniting through sport.
Christchurch are working flat out to field a winning team with Lloyd 'Gunz' in charge. All travelling players are encouraged to register with him without delay. Those yet to decide are reminded flights are filling up and the obvious result is fares are hiked.
Message from the organiser:
Venue details:
The soccer fields are at Westgate, Waitakere (West Auckland), you guys can make your bookings in the following suburbs’ Henderson, Massey, Te Atatu, West Harbour and Glendene.
Tournament Structure
The 6 teams will be split into two groups of three teams, the 3 teams in each group will play each other on Friday. The bottom teams will play for 5th and 6th place playoffs on Saturday, the winners of each group will play the 2nd team in the opposite group (semi finals), winners will proceed to the finals and losers to a 3rd and 4th place playoff. There are 3 reasons for this format;
(a) As you correctly pointed a tournament can’t be determined on the bases of a round robin, there should be a final and the only equitable way is also to have a semi final. This structure is the standard norm for all soccer competitions.
(b) In this way there will be a total of 9 games play in the tournament, in a round robin like we did in Palmerston North you would end up with 15 games. This is a family and friends event, families and friends need time to interact between games more so considering that we may have community / family events like volley ball, tug of war etc.
(c) There is a sponsored award for the winners and the sponsors have stated there should be final to determine the winners.
Awards Dinner (Saturday)
There won’t be any charges to attend the awards party, dinner will be served for free, alcohol at a reasonable price, music played by well known DJays and all this will be done up to a reasonable time, we will not entertain people through to the following morning. We can recommend places to visit for entertainment after midnight.
______The last line gives a hint about life in the city of sails. Our brothers and sisters are literally in Johannesburg, 'akulalwa, hava rare'.
See you all in Auckland, 2-4 April, 2010.
