Zimbabwe U 19 cricket deserves our support during the ICC U 19 World Cup 08.01.2010

The ICC Under - 19 World Cup kicks off on Friday 15 January at Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln with Afghanistan playing India; Ireland against South Africa and Canada against Zimbabwe at the Village Green in Christchurch.

Zimbabwe are in Group C against India, Canada, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

Christchurch was a hive of activity this Friday as teams began to check in and prepare for their warm up matches on Monday and Tuesday.

Unconfirmed reports suggested Zimbabwe will check in between Saturday and Sunday night at the Christchurch Crowne Plaza.

In an interview with Cricket Info, December 2009, Zimbabwe coach, Kevin Curran, was upbeat about the tournament and hoped his charges would make it to the Super 8 fixtures.

Zimbabwe are grouped with hosts New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Canada in the preliminary phase. Curran was optimistic his team would get the two wins needed to progress to the Super Eights. "We should beat Canada easily and try to get another win over Sri Lanka or New Zealand."

Zimpacific encourages Zimbabweans, fellow Africans and friends of Zimbabwe in Christchurch and surrounding towns to turn up in numbers and cheer up the boys. They are Zimbabwe's future regards cricket and deserve support.

An Ashburton based Zimbabwe cricket enthusiast will drive all the way to Christchurch, Zimpacific can reveal.

'Let us go in numbers, carrying our flags, drums and whatever to cheer the team,' appealed Zimbabwe Society chairperson, Joseph Chitongo adding that the Society will explore hosting a function for the team as soon as discussions have been made with the team's management.

On Monday the 11th they have a warm up friendly against Sri Lanka at St Andrews college. It is hoped school going kids, currently on holiday, will turn up and cheer up the boys.
